Ponta Malongane is a renowned and popular holiday resort in Southern Mozambique and is known for the excellent diving in this subtropical setting. Dolphins, whales and whale sharks are a regular sight at Malongane.

Ponta Malongane is just 14km from the South African border at Kozi a memorable vacation destination. It is fast becoming a popular destination for the deep-sea angler and boating enthusiasts as the Southern Mozambique coastline is teaming with game fish

The resort is on the beach and is set within the trees with ample shade. The resort has a restaurant where one can dine or enjoy breakfasts and light meals.

The dive camp is situated next to the beach where all diving and watersport activities are centered. The dive camp feautures huts on platforms between the trees and tented accommodation.

The shaded camp sites are equipped with power points for your convenience. The camp is situated near the beach, sheltered by a dune and only meters from the sea.

The upstairs bar in the dive camp is a favourite meeting place for drinks, sundowners and the best views of the beach and sea. One can enjoy some of the most memorable sunrises from this spot.

The Camp has comprehensive First Aid Equipment including oxygen. Should an emergency arise, the hospital is only 30km away.

 

Ponta Malongane accommodation

Choose from the fully equipped chalets/rondavels some with on-suite bathroom & basic kitchen or campsites with nearby ablution facilities.Or stay in the dive camp in a log hut or tent? All ablutions have cold and warm water and flush toilets.

Although the accommodation is self-catering there is the Fish Eagle Restaurant, which offers guests true Portuguese cooking, breakfast,light meals and dinner. All chalets and units are serviced daily. Please remember to bring your own beach towels. The following accommodation is available:

  • UNITS 2 beds, 4 beds, 5 beds or 6 beds. These all have on suite bathroom and kitchen.
  • RONDAVELS 2 beds which have an on suite bathroom with a bar fridge.
  • CAMPING All campsites have lots of shade and have a plug point. 
  • TENTS dome tents with twin bedded mattresses. Situated in the dive camp. Provide your own linen. No plug points. The self-catering kitchen in the dive camp can be used. Fridge space is allocated to guests staying in the dive camp.

  • LOG HUTSWwooden huts with twin beds (linen provided).Situated in the dive camp. The self-catering kitchen in the dive camp is for the use of guests. Fridge space is allocated to guests in the dive camp.
  • LOGGERHEAD TENT 2 tents which sleeps 8 people., Provide your own linen. There is a kitchen, dinning area, open-air toilet and shower. A private deck with an awesome view of the sea.
  • GUEST HOUSE 3 rooms, which sleep 8 people with 2 bathrooms, kitchen and dinning room. Recently renovated.

Diving in Ponta Malongane

  • Excellent, highly trained skippers and boats are waiting to take you to the reefs in the area.
  • There are dives to suit everybody's taste, from shallow reefs to deeper shark dives for the more advanced diver.
  • Warm sunshine and pristine beaches await you at this popular dive resort.
  • Dolphins, whales and whale sharks are a regular sight at Malongane. The water temperature ranges from 21 ºC in the winter to 28ºC degrees in the summer and excellent diving can be had all year.

There are a wide variety of about 22 reefs to choose from. You can experience the potato bass at Bass City or Hammerhead and Zambezi sharks at Pinnacles. Ponta Malongane also boasts a large number of shallow reefs such as Doodles, Chreche, Texas and more.

Equipment hire is available at Ponta Malongane. The water temperature in summer is approximately 27ºC and in winter 22ºC.The diving visibility is normally 15 to 20 meters in summer but during winter (May to August) the visibility is approximately 25 meters. If you are not a diver come along for a scenic ride and experience the wonders of the sea life such as dolphins and turtles.

Shallow dives 10-18m

  • Breadloaf: 10-14m Sand gullies, plate coral, rays and scorpion fish.
  • Creche: 10-14m Large variety of juvenile reef fish.
  • Doodles: 10-16m A favourite amongst divers octopus, potato bass, rays, moray eels and game fish.
  • Paradise: 10-18m Gullies, overhangs, corals moray eels and turtles.
  • Ridge: 12-16m A ledge, magnificent corals and a large cave and overhangs on this reef.
  • Shallow Malongane: 12-14m Gullies and caves with corals and turtles and rays with the occasional reef shark.
  • Texas: 12-16m A large reef with overhangs and arches. An ideal reef for a drift dive.

Advanced Ponta MalonganeSites 18m+

  • Mavericks: 25-28m A pinnacle rock with a wide variety of residents, moray eels, leaf fish, frog fish and a abundance of sealife.
  • Three Sisters: 21-25m Three pinnacle rocks about 70m apart. A dive not to be missed with a lot of unique fish life.
  • Aquarium: 20 - 24m The 2nd sister and the name says it all. A pinnacle rock with a hole in the middle and resident bass.
  • Anchor: 18- 21m An anchor on the southern end and a variety of reef fish on this fairly large reef.
  • Pinnacles: 28- 42m Hammerheads, Zambezi, Dusky and leopard sharks in summer with game fish and manta rays.
  • Bass City: 18- 22m Bass city is famous for its resident potato bass Bert. The 5 outcrops in the sand is alive with reef fish.
  • Rianna: 19-25m Swimming through a large with a spectacular variety of fish.
  • Kevs Ledge: 21-24m A rock ledge dive with turtles and different marine life.

Fishing in Ponta Malongane

Ponta Malongane is fast becoming the ideal destination for the enthusiastic deep-sea angler and boating enthusiasts due to its abundant game fish. The southern Mozambique coastline is teaming with game fish for the fisherman and skiboat faternity.

Other Ponta Malongane activities

  • Southern Mocambique is known for its abundant birdlife and the fish eagles.
  • Turtles can be seen nesting from November to March on the beaches of Ponta Malongane, it is possible to arrange turtle drives from the resort.
  • Ponta Malongane is involved in a turtle research programme, the loggerhead and leather-back turtles frequent these beaches.
  • Take a drive to nearby Ponta do Ouro for jetski and quad bike fun.

General Info Ponta Malongane:

  • You no longer need a visa to visit Mozambique. Contact us for more info.
  • The resort has a small shops for ice etc. but it is important to take all your own food and other essentials.
  • Fuel is available at Ponta do Ouro , 6km from the resort.
  • This is a malaria area therefore please contact your doctor for advice before your visit.
  • For great dining and a number of different restaurants take an afternoon drive to nearby Ponta do Ouro.
  • As you leave the resort buy a souvenir from the local craft market as a reminder of your visit .

Getting to Ponta Malongane

It is about a 7 hour drive from Johannesburg/Pretoria. You can drive to the border in a normal car but only 4x4 driving is recommended for the last 14km to the resort. You can park your car at a secure parking at the border and we can arrange a border pickup from the border by the resort.

  1. From Johannesburg/Pretoria, take the Witbank Highway.
  2. Take the Hendrina/Ermelo off-ramp.
  3. Through Hendrina, Ermelo, Piet Retief and Pongola.
  4. Pongola and about 50km later turn off to Jozini. Through Jozini turn left at fork and across the dam wall drive to T-junction, turn right then follow the signs to Kosibay.
  5. Through Manguzi carry on straight to the border 25km later.
  6. After the border follow the Malongane signs to the resort for 14km.
  7. The Border is only open from 8am to 5pm, it is therefore important to plan your trip around this.gates are open 24 hours, so you may arrive at any time.
