In 1948 Jacques-Yves Cousteau convinced Rene Bussoz of California to import a new design for a self-contained underwater breathing unit (Scuba) known as the Aqua-lung. Within a few short years aqualungs could be found in several shops across the country and a new breed of diver entered the water. Scuba diving had arrived!
